Around 70% of roofing materials in Canada or the US are made from asphalt shingles. It lasts between 10 and 20 years. They are disposed of in landfills when they’ve worn down. They make about 5-10% of the total disposal waste. Asphalt continues to be widely used despite the availability of alternative options that are sustainable.

Asphalt shingles have a long time frame. Making asphalt could be costly prior to the modernization of gasoline production. Asphalt was the waste product in the old methods refineries, and when these techniques were more effective, asphalt production as a consequence of the waste dwindled. This led to the production of asphalt with increasing costs.

The less expensive price of asphalt has made it widely used for roofs. However, producers decided to make asphalt more brittle to keep lower prices. Asphalt roofing shingles today are constructed more from fiberglass, now instead of asphalt.
